In our first class for Digital Media Foundations we were introduced to the module, introductory concepts and the "Mac" metaphor. We were told about the module, explained assessment strategies, given an overview of course schedule, lectures and workshops and informed about independent studio practice during weeks 7-11.
Further we started talking about Marshall McLuhan's "Ages of Man". He talks about the "Oral Age", "Writing Age", "Print Age" and "Electronic Age". According to McLuhan, media are "extensions of man". The particular age we're in affects the way we think and the way we do things. Marshall McLuhan discusses that the problem is that we tend to think we are still living in the age that precedes our current age. Are our rules / culture / norms etc. still those that are pertinent to the "Electronic Age"?
We were given a task to photograph five signs. The following week we were to explain how these "signs" come to make meaning in life.
